Wisbech snatched victory from the jaws of defeat after Ipswich scored a last-gasp try in the left-hand corner, but the conversion was unsuccessful.

Wisbech 1st XV’s woes in fielding an away team continued with a team only being confirmed as late as Friday evening.

The lads who did make the journey certainly did their club proud.

In the first half unconverted tries came from Raimondas Cook in the left-hand corner, and man-of-the-match scrumhalf James Malkin after Albert Smith won a quick tap penalty to go into the break 10-3 up.

Wisbech started the second half strongly, William Boreham, James Napier and Harry Newman posing a threat.

Sam Prestidge added another try converted by Dan Esser to lead 17-6 before Ipswich started their fightback as two Wisbech players were yellow carded in quick succession.

“I thought in general all the lads played well, in particular James Malkin marshalled the forwards and ran the game well – up until Jacob Goat’s yellow card and they all lost their heads and composure,” said coach Leonard Veenendaal.

“It’s a win on the road and we will take it but I was probably more annoyed with our breakdown in discipline on the pitch than happy about the win.

“There will have to be changes.”

Wisbech have a bye this weekend before taking on undefeated Ely at home on October 24.

Wildcats 93 St Ives 17

Wisbech started their Eastern Counties Three campaign at home in emphatic fashion.

After winning a couple of bonus points on the road the Wildcats scored 17 tries and in the first half raced to a 42-0 lead.

Tries: Joe Barfoot at outside centre nine, Nick Thompsett three, Dave Brodie three and Derrick Hart two.

The Wildcats, who went to the county plate final last year, begin their cup campaign at home to Wendens Ambo at Harecroft Road on Saturday.
