The national stock car racing season kicks off at the Adrian Flux Arena, King’s Lynn, this weekend (Saturday, 5:30pm) with a record entry of cars set to start the season in style.

BriSCA Formula Two Stock Cars contest their opening world qualifying round, while the Two-Litre and 1300cc Stock Car categories both race for prestigious Clive Grief Memorial Trophies.

It is a big year for Formula Two racing on shale-surfaced tracks, with the world semi-finals back at Lynn in August, and the world final itself also on the loose. Among the hopefuls for this year’s world crown is Manea’s Dave Polley. The English Champion has built a new car for shale-surfaced tracks which he intends to make full use of in his hard-charging style.

“Our main aim for this year is to top the world qualifying points and go on to win the world final,” said Polley. “So we will be concentrating a lot on shale.

“We are very pleased with how the car has turned out. We like to think it’s a real stock car – built for crashing as well as winning, just what you need on shale. I also get to defend the English Open in it at Coventry this year.”

The F2 entry list features several Wisbech-based racers, including A-graded Ollie Skeels, regular front runners at Lynn Anthony Winters and Justin Parker, and a return for veteran Robin Cowles. There are also visiting drivers from Scotland and Holland.

The massive 60-car Two-Litre Saloon Stock Car entry is packed with quality, including most of the formula’s major champions, plus Skeels who is doubling up in two formulas alongside his brother Marcus, March-based Jake Swann, and double race winner last time out, Jacob Downey of Outwell.

Like their bigger cousins, the 1300cc Stock Cars have also raised a record for this meeting of over 50 cars. The Wisbech area entry is well into double figures and includes former F2 driver Henry King.
