Clarke smashes final-ball March winning hit over Sawston

March Town CC enjoyed a final ball win 1st XI over visitors Sawston by one wicket in yet another Whitings League Division 1 thriller at The Avenue on Saturday.

With the scores level, Sam Clarke smashed the ball down the ground for the winner, March having needed eight runs from the last six balls.

Sawston had earlier recovered from 31-3 to post an impressive 242 all out. Andy Wright picked up 3-51, with skipper Tyler Phillips one of three bowlers to bag a brace.

A third wicket stand of 96 came after tea, as Saranga Rajaguru hit his top score in the league of 70 and Shardul Brahmbhatt cracked 44 on his return to the side.

With the nerves jangling and the overs running out, two of the youngest players in the team produced a vital 38 runs for the eighth wicket. Ben Chapman scored 23 and Curtis Oldroyd 21 in match-winning cameo roles, to end a run of three defeats.

The 2nd XI were 194 without loss and still lost by three wickets away to Royston with just one ball remaining in the CCA Senior League Division 2.

Nathan Oliver (109) cracked his first century for the club during a sizzling opening wicket stand with Steve Hinson.

The other centurion was James Mortlock for March 3rds to set up a 47-run victory against Abbots Ripton at Doddington in CCA Junior League Division 3N. He smashed 20 boundaries in his 124, including five out of the ground.

Dave Pomfrett bagged 7-26 for March 4ths.
