Hares had gone close through shots from Louise Barbour and Naomi McGarvie but students set stiff exam

By Pete Woodhouse

Cambs Ladies League Cup quarter-final: March Town 1 Cambridge University 3

The Hares got off to a terrific start and went close through shots from Louise Barbour and Naomi McGarvie.

Emma Searle gave the Hares the lead when she scored direct from a corner. Cambs Uni got stronger as the half went on and keeper Tori Sharpe made a great double save, but she could do nothing to stop a Cambs Uni header going in ten minutes before half-time.

In an open second half, the ref adjudged a foul on a Uni player and they scored from the resulting penalty.

Debutant Eleanor McLeish went close and Barbour lobbed the oncoming keeper only to see her shot go just wide.

Cambs Uni scored a third with the last kick of the game to seal a semi-final place.

PoM: Chas Miller (strong midfield performance).
