During half term, Marshland High School continued tradition and took 28 students to Spain on a basketball and hockey tour and yet again it was an amazing success.

The unforgettable week saw students take part in a number of sporting activities and other excursions.

Starting with hockey, students trained at Pau Negre which is next to the 1992 Olympic Stadium and the pitch was used during the Games. The coach was Andreu Enric, who is a former Spanish international who won the Champions Trophy and European Cup.

Following the training session were some evening games.

For their first time on Astroturf, during the opening 20 minutes the boys kept the score goalless, with Tom Nunn, Harvey Pearce, keeper Carl Purvey on debut and captain Harry Kirk superb. Man of the match: Jack Cook.

Marshland gave as good as they got with some beautiful tackles from captain Eryn Campbell, aided by Georgia Snape and Eileen Ozpembe but they tired towards the end.

The day later, the focus moved to basketball at a local facility for a training session with FC Barcelona under 16s coach Xavi Pardines. He was, again, an excellent coach.

Once we completed the session we headed to Camp Nou for lunch and a tour around the famous stadium, a quick stop off at the view point at the top of Montjuic before we travelled to UE Montgat for the evening fixtures.

Marshland, a team with almost no experience of playing basketball started very well. Captain Josh Button scored 8 points, Harry Kirk five, while Carl Purvey made numerous blocks. Player of the match: Tom Nunn, 13 points.

The B team played a very strong and experienced Spanish team. Charlie Hyde scored a fantastic three-pointer. Thomas Narramore made some crucial blocks while Eileen Ozpembe and Tegan Eggleton scored valuable points.

Throughout the week the students’ behaviour, effort, attitude and willingness to have fun was outstanding.
