Marshland just miss district title
Marshland High School entered two teams into the under 12’s basketball tournament.
A massive thank you to Cameron Lawson who came to coach one of the teams as without him the West Walton-based school would only have been able to enter one team.
Some 13 of the 14 players were making their debut for the school basketball team.
The A team were one game away from becoming district champions. They had gone through the tournament unbeaten going into the last game and took on Springwood. A good start and a basket from Kristers Skriban meant Marshland went 2-0 up, but Springwood scored three late baskets to win 6-2.
Before then, the team beat KL Academy B 12-0, Smithdon (Hunstanton) 8-2 and drew with KLA A 4-4. Three more wins followed against KES Academy B 8-6, the eventual champions, KES A, 10-4 and Marshland B 10-2.
That meant the A team finished in joint second place. Players of the tournament were Kaspar Adomavicius, who scored 20 points, and captain Ben Dear, 14.
The B team were even less experienced than the A team but they played very well, finishing in fifth place out of eight teams.
They started with a 2-2 draw against Smithdon and a fantastic win against KES B 6-2 with Bento Rodrigues scoring all six points. They then lost 4-0 to champions KES A followed by two excellent draws against KLA B and Springwood, who finished joint second.
They finished with defeats to Marshland A team, although at one point they were 2-0 up, and to KLA A 6-0.
Players of the tournament were Aidan Cook, who scored six points, and Rodrigues, six.
