Wisbech comeback to claim a draw from the jaws of defeat against Cambridge South




Wisbech Men’s 1sts produced a thrilling comeback to draw 3-3 at home against Cambs South, in a game of two halves.

The hosts started poorly, conceding twice within the opening minutes as defensive lapses gifted the visitors an early advantage.

A third goal before half-time left Wisbech staring down the barrel of a heavy defeat.

After the break, Tom Jupp converted from the penalty spot to reduce the deficit before sustained pressure and attacking persistence paid off again, with Kieran Hallatt finding the net to make it 2-3 late on.

As the final whistle approached, Wisbech won one last penalty corner.

In a moment of high drama, Matt Pooley turned the ball home to complete the comeback and secure a hard-earned point.

Wisbech Ladies 1sts faced Norwich Dragons 1s at home in what proved to be a tight, competitive contest that ended 0-2 in favour of the visitors.

Norwich broke the deadlock early in the second half, capitalising on a swift counterattack before adding a second soon after.

Despite the result, Wisbech’s performance was full of positives.

The Men’s 2nds faced a tough test away to a youthful and technically sharp Cambridge University 4ths side, going down 2-5.

A slow start proved costly as the hosts raced into a 4-0 lead by half-time.

Yet Wisbech refused to fold, showing far greater determination in the second half.

Goals from Sam Markillie and Sam Booty rewarded their persistence, while defender Jonathan Shippey was named Man of the Match.

The squad will look to carry that second-half grit into next week’s clash as they aim to climb the league table.

Wisbech Ladies 2nds endured a frustrating afternoon in a 3-2 defeat away to Cambs South 4ths.

The visitors fell 2-0 behind after two early defensive errors but responded superbly after the break.

Layla Gull halved the deficit with a beautifully constructed team move before Lou Sandall’s stunning long-range strike levelled the scores at 2-2.

However, Cambs South regained the lead late on to claim victory.

The Men’s 3rds extended their unbeaten run with an impressive 4-1 victory away at Newmarket.

Wisbech began to dominate after a cagey opening, with Olly Mitchell opening the scoring in style.

Further goals from Elliot Peck and Harry Shippey gave the visitors a commanding 3-0 half-time lead.

Jerome Lawrence added a fourth after the break, sealing the win before Newmarket grabbed a consolation goal from a short corner.

The Ladies 3rds produced a standout defensive performance to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory away at Cambridge City 7ths.

Despite heavy pressure from the hosts, Wisbech’s backline stood firm throughout.

Becky Allen scored the decisive goal just before half-time after a slick attacking move, and Wisbech’s organisation ensured they held on for the win.

Charlotte Holt was named Player of the Match for her relentless attacking energy and tireless work upfield.

The Men’s 4ths went down 0-3 to Cambs South 5ths but once again demonstrated fight and progress.

Two early goals gave the visitors control.

The team regrouped and put in a stronger second-half showing, with senior players Lee Punter and Tim Ward guiding the side effectively.

Harry Wiffen’s outstanding display earned him Player of the Match, while youngsters Noah Harrison and Jasper Allen also impressed.

The Ladies 4ths maintained their excellent recent form with a 1-0 home victory over Kettering 3rds, their fourth consecutive match without defeat.

After a shaky opening, the team settled into their rhythm, with goalkeeper Rachael Archard producing a series of vital saves, deservedly claimed Player of the Match.

Wisbech took the lead after 25 minutes when Lou Cooper pounced on a rebound following a short corner, firing home to make it 1-0.

Kettering pushed hard in the second half, but Wisbech’s defence stood strong and preserved their clean sheet.

Next weekend promises another packed schedule, with five Wisbech sides set to play at home on Saturday from 10:30 am at Harecroft Road.
