The Walpole Roller Hockey Club started life five years ago as Rollervillage RHC, based at the then-rollervillage skating rink in Walpole Highway.

Over the years its name was changed to Walpole RHC as the venue’s name changed to Skaterz. In 2012 the then-owners of Skaterz decided they only wanted to cater for casual and recreational skaters so all sports clubs were asked to find other training facilities.

Luckily, the Hudson Leisure Centre was available. Two years down the line and the rink at Walpole Highway has re-opened under new management as Skaters. The roller rink has undergone a facelift, added more social skating hours and are encouraging roller sports and many other activities at the premises.

Groovy Tots baby and toddlers disco group meet on a Friday morning at 9.30am, line dancing is for beginners on Thursdays at 7.30 and intermediates at 8.30, skating lessons are on Saturday mornings, the speed skating club train on Saturdays at 5pm-7pm, between the social skate sessions and, of course, Walpole RHC on Tuesdays from 6pm.

“It feels like we’ve been on a long journey as a club but now we’ve made it back home where we belong,” said secretary Abie Davis.

“After settling in we now feel it’s time to grow and recruit more players. Over the next month anyone wanting to try roller hockey can come along to a training session from 6pm until 8.30 on a Tuesday evening and join in a session.

“We teach children from 6 years old and all you need to do is turn up. If you have your own skates and shin pads please bring them with you or you can hire a pair of skates.”
