LOCAL boxers Jordan Gill and Charlie Stevens are chasing National Junior ABA titles in the ring at Rochester this weekend.
Gill from the Chatteris Boxing Club faces Jake Slater from the Sunderland on and March Boxing Club’s Charlie Stevens faces Ibrahim Shah from the Bolton Golves club.
The 15 year-old Stevens received a bye in the semi-finals and faces a tough opponent in Shah, who was Three Nations winner for England last year, in the under 60 kilo division.
But Stevens too has been in very good form this year and March coach David Cole rates his chances of success 50-50.
He said: “It is a tough call as Shah is a tall and strong lad, but Charlie is a good lad too.
“He has been training very well. He is a strong lad and is a good technical boxer with a variety of shots. It should be a good bout.”
Gill was beaten in the quarter-finals last year and that had has made even more determined to take the title this time around.
The 16-year-old, an England international, has his eyes set on a professional career and a title this weekend would be a tremendous boost to that target.
Jordan’s father Paul, the coach at the Chatteris club said:”We do not know much about the Slater only that he is a hard puncher. I am not too concerned about how good he is but more with Jordan’s performance in the final.
“He did really well to win his semi-final against a very good boxer and has spent another week in Sheffield training with Dominic Ingle. I think it is 50-50 but Jordan is in very good shape.
“It is great for a town like Chatteris to have a boxer in the ABA finals and hopefully it will attract more lads down to the gym to train.”
The Chatteris club had two youngsters in action at the Haddenham dinner show at the weekend with 12-year-old Dean Baxter boxing well to take a majority decision against Joe Hassan from Sunderland.
The 11-year-old Ryan Ducker also put up a good performance before losing to a majority decision against Jake Ionasin from Romford in a very good contest.
Paul Gill commented: Both lads boxed very well and it was good experience for them.”
The club still have tickets available for their boxing night on May 28 and anyone interested should contact Matty Payne on 01353 693630.
