Over 200 competitors turned out for the International Taekwon-do GB Open Championships at the Point 4 Leisure Centre in Hereford.
Representing the Carter school, that meets at the Hudson Leisure Centre (New Vision) in Wisbech, were: Anthony Carter (sixth Dan); Stuart Murat (third Dan); Elizabeth Davies (third Dan); Ryan Boyd (red belt); and Conner Thiart (yellow belt). They were all incredibly successful.
Carter himself achieved silver in the black belt veterans’ competition; Stuart got bronze in black belt men’s sparring; Elizabeth got two bronzes in the girls’ junior patters and sparring; Ryan got gold in junior red belt power and silver in sparring; rounded off by Connor with silver in yellow belt junior sparring.
“It was amazing!” said Elizabeth, “especially for Mr Carter. He came out of retirement himself, to show support for the team, and put on a brilliant display of extremely complex sixth Dan patterns to take the silver. The last time he competed was 20 years ago.”
Stuart said: “The most incredible thing about Taekwon-do is that my mother, Dawn, works out with me, and she is a third Dan too, and I get a chance to have some great sparring matches with her, each time I get home from University.”
Dawn was the team’s medic and also Stuart’s second.
