Wisbech II 17, Holt II 15
THE seconds returned to winning ways with a closely-fought brutal victory.
Holt arrived with a powerful pack. A mistake at the scrum on the five metre line led to an early Holt try.
Realising that Wisbech would not win an ‘arm wrestle’ they moved the ball away from the contact area. In a quick break from inside their own half, returning centre Neil Hunt powered through his opposite man and jinked past the winger for a corner try.
Daniel Roberts cut an angle and tore the defence wide open to sprint under the posts, conversion from Matt Mitchell. With an injured man on the ground the Holt full-back side-stepped his way past the defence for an unconverted try under the posts.
Quick ball from the base of the ruck saw number 8 Ben Wicks crash through several tackles for an impressive score. Wisbech led 17-10 at the break.
In the second half a Holt rolling maul soon paid off with a try to make it a two-point game. Wisbech clung on and were helped by strong carries from young prop Geoff Crosby.
Captain Oliver Mackett said: “I’m immensely proud of the team-work and heart shown. It was great to see some old faces returning.”
This Saturday Wisbech II’s travel to Cantabs for a friendly, kick off 3pm.
