Fraser bounces back with man-of-the-match award

Harleston Magpies 3rds 1, March Town 1st 3

The welcome return of Jody Betts, Jacob Fraser and Rob Mitchell put a bit of a spring back in the team’s step after a disappointing result in the EML Div 1N defeat the previous week.

Betts’ velvety touch in the D rewarded March with a short corner and with a well-disguised slip to the left Ed Batt showed both composure and accuracy in scoring the opener.

March suffered a setback shortly after when Ashley Welland was shown a straight yellow for lifting his stick above head height to bring down an aerial pass.

While down to ten men, March conceded to a well-worked Magpies short corner. This spurred the team on to go 2-1 up almost immediately when Betts provided a deft touch into the net from a Mark Patrick pass.

Captain James Mansfield was then shown a yellow for an innocuous challenge. Patrick then turned scorer when he used his own invention, the reverse stick strike, to rifle the ball past the Magpies keeper.

Man of the match was Jacob Fraser for his consistent tackling and penetrative runs from right back.

Next week March host Cambridge University from 2.30pm.

Cambs South 3rds 1, March 3rd 3

In their new strip and with two wins and two consecutive clean sheets, confidence was high for the journey to Cambs South.

After going close early on it was left to top scorer Brian Fox to open the March scoring. Not to be outdone father Stuart converted a penalty corner to make it 2-0 at the interval.

March went to sleep at the start of the second half to allow South a glimmer of hope, but Dan Shirley put March two ahead again to give them a well deserved victory. Martin Todd played well on his return to earn man of the match.

n In other results, March Town 2nds went down 4-0 at home to Cambs South 1st; March Town 4ths 7-2 home win over Rutland 4ths.
