WISBECH 17-year-old Liam Knight picked up two swimming gold medals and a bronze at an open meeting in Bethune in France over the weekend.
Knight was representing the City Of Peterborough Swimming Club and took gold on the opening day in the 50 metres backstroke and then on Saturday was in top form again with victory in the 400 metre individual medley and a bronze medal in the 100 metre backstroke.
He also reached the finals of the 200 metres backstroke and individual medley but had to leave before the events took place to get back to England.
Knight, who attends the Arthur Mellows sixth form in Peterborough, said: “I was a bit surprised how well I did because I have been in hard training for the Olympic trials next month.
“I had a personal best in the 50 metres backstroke and only just missed out in the 400 metres medley.
“It was a pity I had to leave early as I think I would have won two more finals as well.
“I am really looking forward to the Olympic Trials and to compete against the top British swimmers. It is a bit early for me to make the Olympics this year but it will be a good experience for me.”
Knight won a British title in the 200 metres backstroke at the National Youth Championships last summer.
