BACKSTROKE sensation Liam Knight (pictured above) swims in the European Championships in Belgium today and has high hopes of bringing back a medal.
First event for the Wisbech 17-year-old is the 100 metres backstroke and he is already rated seventh in Europe and believes he can certainly improve on that.
He said before flying off to Belgium on Sunday: “Training has gone really well after the last few months and I am feeling at my best. I think I can improve by a second in the 100 metres and everything goes to plan I can pick up a medal.
“This is the biggest event I have competed in so far and I am really looking forward to it.”
He will also be swimming in the 200 metres backstroke on Friday and the 50 metres on Saturday.
Knight, who swims for the City of Peterborough Club, but also uses the Hudson Leisure Centre facilities as well, qualified for July’s European Junior Championships by smashing his personal bests at the televised Olympic trials in March.
He also won four gold medals at the East Region Swimming Championships in his latest races.
