Wisbech’s Andy Lucas captained the England men’s pool A team competing in Malta in the Nations Cup.
During the group stages the team had two great wins over Gibraltar and Libya, with Lucas leading by example winning 80 per cent of the frames he played. England knocked out Northern Ireland in the semi-final and Malta beat Scotland in the other semi.
He said: “The home nation getting to the final I knew was going to produce an incredible atmosphere but nothing could prepare us for what we all experienced on the night of the final. The Arena was packed to the rafters.”
England kept a small lead throughout and Lucas broke and cleared the table to take a two frame lead. Jack Whelan held his nerve and produced an excellence clearance to bring the title home.
Lucas has been representing his country at the highest level for many years and is convinced the England team is probably the best he has played in.
