Marlins send records tumbling

Stephen Mavin from March Marlins stole the show over the weekend at Ponds Forge, Sheffield competing in the British Gas Masters & Senior Age Group Long Course Championships, smashing two European records plus five British records.

Mavin (35/39 year age group) set a new European mark of 56.28secs in the 100m butterfly in the 35-39 age group, just missing out on the world record.

He was then joined by his club mates Daniel Wardley-Smith, Martyn Fresher and Garry Mavin to set a new British and European 4x100m medley relay record (4:14.76), also just shy of a world record mark.

From six swims, he broke one European record and five British records and smashed six East Region records. He was also took part in the 160+ years team from March that smashed the European 400m Medley Team event and a new British Record in the 200m Medley. The team was Daniel Wardley-Smith, Martyn Fresher, Garry Mavin and Steve Mavin.

l Wisbech swimmers Danielle Rayner and Tom Kelly took part in the Eastern Region Youth Championships at the 50m pool in Basildon, at the Sporting Village.

It was the first time for a number of years that the club had representatives competing against the best swimmers in the region.

Results: Danielle 15/16yrs Woman’s 200m Backstroke 13th, Open 400m Individual Medley 14th, 100m Backstroke 11th, 50m Backstroke 10th; Tom 15/16yrs 50m Breaststroke 32nd.

Some 21 swimmers from Wisbech SC competed in the Tulip Open Meet at Spalding. Oliver Harris, Jack Lane, Jacob Rhodes, Grace Cherry, Oliver Newton, Phoebe Gallagher, Abigail Foley, Hannah Brown, Kate Newton, Will Bell, Tom Kelly, Katie Bell and Ben Marsters all reached finals resulting in 11 1st, eight 2nd, six 3rd finishes, plus 76 personal best times. Top male awards went to Jack Lane 10yr Male and Ben Marsters 15+ Male. The team finished in third place behind South Lincs and Deepings.
