Swaffham 5, Wisbech Colts 29
AN excellent defensive effort allowed Wisbech Colts to complete the double over the Norfolk team this season.
A very strong start from Swaffham tested the organisational skills of Wisbech’s defence, but solid work from the pack and some good kicking to touch by Nick Thompsett kept the home side at bay.
A quick turnover allowed Wisbech to break out of their own half and, with some slick handling from the backs, winger Dom Airoll crossed the tryline. In response, Swaffham pressed again and, despite further good defence from Wisbech, the home side got through for their own try, to leave the scores level at 5-5 at halftime.
At the start of the second half, Wisbech upped the pace. Quick phase ball at rucks was delivered effectively by scrum half Jacob Parsley with all of the forwards working well to secure possession at each breakdown, especially man-of-the-match Richard ‘Hoobs’ Hobday.
The entire team kept their composure and their continued pressure led to four second half tries, all from No.8 Nathan Goodale, in another standout performance. Two of these tries were converted by Thompsett.
The coaching team hope that the squad can finish the season in the positive manner that was demonstrated in this game.
The colts team trains at Wisbech Rugby Club on Wednesday evenings (6pm) and Sunday mornings (10am). Any interested players are welcome or call Andy Bolden on 07899 956953.
