Wisbech Town’s mixed hockey team are playing in the National Finals at Sheffield this weekend.

They battled through fixtures with Harpenden, Stevenage and Harlow, then had a hard fought game against Letchworth which saw them come out 2-1 winners to secure their finals place.

In the semi-final early on Saturday they face Preston. This will be a tough challenge as Preston’s men recently won promotion to the National League and their ladies play at a similar level to Wisbech’s.

The squad now features three internationals. Brad Apted played over 75 times for New Zealand and James Sheppard and Jon Shippey attended a trial for England over 40s at the weekend.

After two hours of practice drills they were handed England shirts and played against a team of the best players in the West region as part of the trial. Both did well and await news of whether they will become regular squad members.
