Edward Elmore from Doddington has become the National under 18 Short Mat Bowls Singles Championship following in his brother Robert’s footsteps after his 2006 win.
Elmore won every game throughout the day at Kempston Indoor Bowls Club to clinch the 2011 title.
The day started off in group format and Edward played three opponents, winning the group with high scoring results, including 19-4, 15-4 and 15-8 scores. After two more wins he beat Mitchell Young of Essex 12-8 in the semi final.
In the final he met David Hancock of Oxfordshire and did not get off to the best of starts, going down three on the first end. However from then on it was close all the way to the end.
The score after 10 of the 11 ends was 10-9 to Hancock.
Elmore turned the end around, pushing a toucher into the ditch on top of the jack to take shot and to be certain to force another end, as David had no other touchers on the green to change the situation. The game then went to an extra deciding end and Elmore ran out a 14-10 winner.
The Doddington club is open Tuesday evening from 7-10pm for anyone to come and have a go and become a member. All new players get their first session free of charge.
