Nicholls in clean sweep

Veteran Allan Nicholls dominated the Wisbech and District Table Tennis Association’s 65th Annual Championships at Marshland High School on Saturday.

The Marshland High School knockout for the over and under 13 also took place the same day. For the Seniors there were 21 entrants competing for the four main events. Nicholls, unbeaten in the league this season, won all the events.

In the Open Singles only two seeds made it through to the semi-finals, Nicholls (1) and Owen Turner (3) who was in the other half of the draw. The final was between these two players which saw an exciting and entertaining five-end game, Nicholls winning 13-11, 4-11, 9-11, 113, 11-8.

In the Men’s Doubles Nicholls teamed up with Steve Barrett (1) and in the other half Turner teamed up with a regular finalist John Blyth (2). There were no real problems for these pairings to get to the final where again was an entertaining five-end battle, the No 1 seeds winning 3-11, 5-11, 11-2, 13-11, 11-7.

In the Veteran 40 Singles Nicholls (1) was against the No. 3 seed Steve Ely, with Nicholls winning 11-9, 11-9, 13-11. In the Veteran 50 Singles three of the seeds made it through to the semis. Again it was Nicholls (1) against John Blyth (3) with Nicholls being the winner 11-2, 11-9, 11-9. In the Handicap Singles Owen Turner made it through to the final against newcomer Irmantas Kukuris, with Kukuris just taking it 31-27. In the Consolation Singles Steve Mason won against Paul Reed 11-6, 11-8, 4-11, 11-8.

In the Junior event there were 15 entrants in the 13 years and over age group and 14 in the under 13. Both groups featured round robin games.

The results were: Over 13’s winner Jake Barsby, runner-up Peter Ryan, 3rd George Reader, 4th Luke Ryan. Under 13: Joe Lewis, r-up Jack Lane, 3rd Harry Cleverley, 4th Jordan Vick.
