Wisbech 25pts,

Canvey Island 19pts

Wisbech bounced back to form with a very good win despite again having selection issues in the back division.

Shane Vickers returned to the centre after his suspension and Steven Priest was drafted in along with Nick Thompsett.

Wisbech looked solid from the kick off and went ahead midway through the half when full back Mark Laws slotted over two quick penalties. Shane Vickers picked up a loose ball and sprinted to the line to score a try to make it 11-0 at half-time.

Wisbech were caught napping early in the second half as Canvey Island went over.

Wisbech brought on James Napier for Vickers and a fast flowing move was finished off by Napier and Laws converted. Wisbech struggled with the visitors’ rolling maul and from a line out Canvey drove towards the home line to score again, the conversion made it 18-12.

The home side once again used the ball at pace and it was passed to fly half Will Pettit who burrowed his way over to score an excellent team try. Laws converted.

Deep into extra time, the visitors stole another try.

“We played some scintillating rugby, but allowed Canvey get back into the game,” said manager Cliff Humphreys.

Wisbech face Sudbury in the Senior Vase (2pm home) on Saturday.
