Talismanic captain Solly Prestidge led the way with a strong performance as Wisbech scored eight tries in a scintillating performance at home to Ipswich YMCA.
Wisbech had put the game to bed in the first 20 minutes with a four-try burst – all scored via excellent teamwork.
Jacob Goat was the first to score when, after an excellent offload, he went over; shortly after a backs’ move saw Harry Newman cross the line, scrum half Jack Malkin pounced on a loose ball at the back of the visitors’ scrum to score the third try.
Prestidge himself scored the fourth try after some excellent interplay with Ben Chapman and Sam Anderson added the fifth after a catch and drive at the line-out. Newman slotted over five conversions as Wisbech took a 35-0 half-time lead.
Wisbech brought on all three substitutes and soon settled back into their patterns of play. Mathew Esser was on hand to collect a kick ahead to score in the corner. Prestidge scored his second try of the afternoon from a line-out and maul, and man of the match prop Kerrie McMillan went over under the posts. Newman added a further two conversions.
“It was a total team performance, there were powerful performances all over the pack,” said coach Leonard Veenendaal.
Wisbech travel to league leaders Ely on Saturday having drawn the home fixture early in the season.
“We will need to put in strong training sessions on Wednesday and Thursday this week,” added Veenendaal to prepare for the match.
n On Saturday the Wildcats beat St Ives 7-17 away in Eastern Counties 3 West.
Man of the match Albert Smith scored a hat-trick, skipper Olly Mackett adding a conversion.
