Students pass on harsh lesson to Long Sutton

Cambridge University 2nds 7,

Long Sutton 1

Long Sutton slumped to a heavy defeat against a very well drilled and fit University side in this Premier B fixture on Saturday.

Sutton, blighted by unavailability, got a dream start as they broke down the right and forced the ball across the circle until it found Gary Hales who had a simple task to tap in.

The first half saw Cambridge dominate possession but the visiting defence worked hard with good work again by Andy Shore and Josh Fyson.

The hosts equalised just before half-time as a completely mishit shot deceived Jake Loweth.

The second period saw Cambridge launching wave upon wave of attacks that the Sutton defence somehow managed to repel. The relentless pressure eventually saw Cambridge take the lead.

The students suddenly discovered the quality finishing they had been lacking earlier as a number of fine shots crashed by keeper Loweth. Sutton must hope availability improves as they face another key game at home to Harleston on Saturday.

Long Sutton Ladies 1st 2, Peterborough Ladies 1st 0

Long Sutton started by putting a lot of pressure on the Peterborough defence and winning a penalty flick early, but failed to take the lead.

In the last 10 minutes of the first half Peterborough were the stronger team, gaining a number of short corners. But some excellent defending prevented them from taking the lead, with goalkeeper Lorraine Wallis making some superb clearances .

The second half saw Sutton force a string of short corners and they took the lead from one of them through Gemma Gribble.

Minutes later they scored again from another short corner that was slipped wide to Mel Ludlam to slot in.

Some excellent defending from player of the match Sally Cade prevented Peterborough pulling back any goals.
