GALLANT Tony Smith (pictured) was an unlucky loser in the ABA Schoolboys Championships in Mansfield on Saturday.
The March Boxing Club youngster was contesting the under 40kilo final against Mark Dickinson from Birtley and lost out on points by 21-18.
The 12-year-old, who had won his nine previous bouts, made a sluggish start to the contest in the first round trailing by three points at the end and that rally cost him the title.
He was a lot sharper in round two and but was unable to make up the deficit. In round three Smith, who lives in Sawtry, really gave it a go and threw a lot of punches and convinced a lot of people he had won the round.
Coach Bernie Wing said: “He was having to play catch up after the first round. He really upped his game after that and I thought he had done enough in the final round with the number of punches he threw, but that was not how the computer saw it.”
Wing still believes that Smith has a big future in boxing and local fans will be able to see him at the March club’s next show on April 13.
The club’s Danny Hedges and Mark Crosby will be contesting the ABA Junior Championships next.
