Town take the derby honours

Long Sutton 1, Wisbech 4

Wisbech returned to winning ways and consolidated third place in NE14 Hockey East Premier B with a comfortable win at neighbours Long Sutton.

Both teams were missing players but it was Wisbech who dealt with the situation better. Sutton had early chances with Danny Sissons forcing the visiting keeper into action after good work down the flanks. but the rest of the half was dominated by Wisbech. They took the lead when Aaron Cobb made some room for himself in the circle and finished well.

Both sides had short corner goals ruled out for being too high before Wisbech grabbed a deserved second through Tom Jupp.

Both goalkeepers were in good from at the start of the second half with James Sheppard saving for Wisbech and Sutton goalkeeper Jake Loweth also in good form as play switched from end to end.

Wisbech went 3-0 up when Loweth fouled Matt Levanda and Jon Shippey scored from the penalty spot.

Sutton pulled a goal back through Gary Hales and had further chances including some good touches from Nick Bailey back after a lengthy injury break.

Wisbech quickly struck back when Levanda touched a short corner home for 4-1. Both sides saw their numbers depleted as yellow cards were shown and Wisbech had to weather a storm when they were outnumbered by two.

Their defence held strong, though, and James Sheppard pulled off some fine saves to prevent Sutton getting back into the game.

On Saturday Wisbech host second placed Norwich City (2.30).

Sutton travel to Letchworth on Saturday knowing that they must be tighter in defence and more ruthless in front of goal.
