Wisbech 43, Harlow 7
Wisbech celebrated their return to London NE3 in fine style on Saturday at home to Essex side Harlow, who finished third in the league last season, despite going seven points down.
Wisbech looked rusty in the first quarter. They absorbed the early pressure until on 20 minutes Harlow’s centre broke through to score under the posts.
This score spurred Wisbech on – the forwards started to dominate and won the ball, scrum half Andy Clayton was able to link up with the backs who started to show their class.
Wisbech levelled when winger Joe Barfoot outpaced the defence going under the post; re-signed full back Mark Laws added the conversion. Wisbech won a couple of scrum phases and prop James Griffin went over. This gave the home side a 12–7 half-time advantage.
Winger Shane Vickers caught a Claydon overhead kick and crashed over in the corner from the kick off, Laws slotted over an excellent conversion and shortly after added a penalty.
Barfoot scored his second converted try under the posts. Laws rounded off an excellent personal performance by adding a further two tries both of which he converted to secure a valuable bonus point.
Club manager Cliff Humphreys said: “It was an exhilarating performance.
“If we can maintain this level throughout the season we will be a match for anyone in this league.”
Next weekend Wisbech are South Woodham Ferrers. Training has been changed to Wednesday 7pm prompt.
Lakenham Hewett I 30,
Wisbech II 19
Wisbech opened their season with a loss at a strong Lakenham and Hewett side.
With over ten players out due to injury and illness Wisbech travelled with four debutants. Centre Nick Thompsett slotted two drop goals and a touchline penalty but Lakenham brought it back to 9-8. Thompsett widened the gap with an unconverted try.
Just before the second half Wisbech lost influential prop Andy Comben to injury.
Lakenham started the second half with a score as Wisbech were leading by a slender point. Debutant Dermot Raftery bagged a well-worked try in the corner. But Lakenham hit back with three tries.
Wisbech II host Holt II at Harecroft Road this Saturday at 3pm.
