Wisbech Grammar School has been selected by England’s most successful rugby club, Leicester Tigers, to become one of eight Developing Player Programme (DPP) centres.
Speaking at the school’s annual Speech Day, headmaster, Mr Chris Staley, announced the breaking news that the link-up will take place as of September 2016.
Leicester Tigers Junior Academy manager, Jamie Taylor, said: “We are delighted to be moving our centre to Wisbech Grammar School from September. Their first class facilities and set up will make it an excellent venue.”
Mr Staley said: “The DPP is a major step on the elite player pathway. Players are selected from this programme into the full Tigers Academy. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to work in partnership with a premiership rugby club with a reputation for excellence. To have the very best U14s, U15s and U16s at Wisbech Grammar on a regular basis from September is such a positive step forward.
“I am confident that in the years to come, the School will make more equally high profile sporting partnerships to ensure that pupils have access to outstanding sporting provision.”
This development builds on the School’s growing reputation for sporting excellence following the announcement earlier this year that it is to launch an Elite Sports Performance Programme from September to develop further those pupils with elite sports potential.
Elsewhere in the headmaster’s speech, Mr Staley also announced that from September the Rookies Netball Club will be transferring its training ground to the School.
This long-standing club nurtures and develops young talent and has fast tracked many girls into satellite and county academies. The club has just won the East Counties regional contest and is going to the nationals in September.
* Wisbech Grammar School pupil William Gowler was recently awarded ‘Player of the Tournament’ at the King’s Ely U15 Twenty/20 tournament. William, who is in the Third Form, scored an impressive 98 in the first game, leading WGS to beat King’s Ely U15 and took 2-28 in the final versus Kimbolton.
Director of sport, Mr Phil Webb said: “We are incredibly proud of William’s sporting achievements this year which is a direct result of his dedication, commitment and hard work.”
