Wisbech RUFC have two pre-season friendlies lined up against London 3 North East sides, the first on Saturday at home to West Norfolk, followed by travelling to Harlow on September 6.
They kick-off the 2014/15 Eastern Counties 1 campaign at home to Thetford on September 13.
The welcome return from Peterborough Lions of prop Raimondas Vinksna along with senior players Nathaniel Humphreys, Solomon Prestidge and James Napier – who were not available most of last season – have committed along with stalwarts Ben Chapman, Steven Priest and James Patrick.
This has given head coach Leonard Veenendaal reason to be quietly optimistic: “I am focusing on building a squad, a group of players I can count on,” he said.
“We have had the added benefit of both Darryl and De la Rey Veenendaal who brought a wealth of experience at national and international level to our pre-season training sessions and the squad have trained hard and prepared well for the last two months.
“We had no pre-season or any form of proper preparation last season, and I am also more familiar with the players’ strengths and weaknesses.
“Now it’s about believing and making the hard work count.”
Wisbech will be fielding both the 1st XV as well as the Wild Cats at Harecroft Road against local rivals West. Both matches kick-off 3pm.
