The seconds were unable to emulate their cup run of last season and were knocked out by a determined Newmarket side in the quarter-final.

Wisbech started brightly with a downhill advantage. Number 8 Tom Goose intercepted a pass and went on an unstoppable 50m run through the covering defence, Robbie Brooks added the extras.

Second row Richard Pearson scored in the corner with Brooks converting. Wisbech then conceded a string of penalties. Newmarket capitalised with an unconverted and converted try. The sides went to half-time at 12-14.

In the second half, an unfortunate mistake at a ruck saw Newmarket scoring a converted try. Charlie Roberts, standing in at fly-half, popped inside again to Goose who bagged his second try and Toby used his strength to cross the white line.

In the last 20 minutes the game became scrappy and Newmarket edged ahead to take the tie.
