Wisbech Town HC 3 Long Sutton 2

After enduring ‘the season from hell’ last year, Wisbech went into their opening Premier B match with confidence having benefitted from a productive pre-season.

A tentative start from both teams was no surprise, but Wisbech took the lead, thanks to a flowing move which left Will Denny an easy chance.

Sutton hit back almost immediately. At a short corner captain Ashley Taylor blasted home from the top of the D.

Wisbech found their stride quicker in the second half and soon re-took the lead through Denny, converting an excellent move in which almost every Wisbech player had a touch of the ball. The hosts continued to create chances and Denny completed his hat trick with a fine individual effort off the post.

Then Taylor was given a yellow card for scything down evergreen Kiwi Brad Apted.

However Sutton scored through Danny Sisson following a defensive mistake. Wisbech held on, providing Charlie Baxter with the perfect birthday present – a first league win in his second year as captain.

Sutton will be hoping to pick up their first points when they host City of Peterborough 2nd XI.

Father and son combination produced good performances, youngster Oliver Osborne and Player of the Match Nick Osborne.

Wisbech got their rewards with goals before half-time. The first came following Emma Baker’s inch-perfect cross to vice captain Lou Sandall. Youngster Georgia Bingham then set up Baker to neatly slot the ball past the keeper.

St Neots 2

New look Long Sutton Ladies had the better chances and yet failed to collect the three points after a late stage mix-up which gifted the win to St Neots.

St Neots took the lead, and in the second half Tania White rattled the post. Some 15 minutes into the second half on another short corner Leanne Woodhead fired home for the equaliser.
