Cannock 2, Wisbech Vets 1
Wisbech Veterans, sponsored by SB Components, travelled to Birmingham for a place in the National Trophy final at the Olympic Park.
They faced a tough match against a team full of ex-internationals and national champions.
They were keen to show the opposition they were not going to get their own way. They caused problems for the Cannock defence with the pace of Brad Apted and Rob Mitchell.
Wisbech had a few gilt-edge chances which were not converted but eventually from open play Jody Betts scored on his reverse stick. Cannock came more into the game with long balls to their forwards but with good tackling from Nick Osborn and Nick Overland they kept Cannock at bay. Unfortunately the opposition did score from a well worked short corner late in the half.
In the second half Cannock started well but were contained by excellent work especially from midfielder Mark Littlechild. The game should have changed when Cannock’s centre forward could have been red carded for violent conduct.
Soon after, another short corner was awarded and their captain, who had made over 200 international appearances, slammed the ball past the goalkeeper. Wisbech continue to press for the equaliser and had an excellent one on one but an in-form keeper saved again.
Wisbech can be proud of their performance and on a different day the result could have gone in their favour.
