Nets & Edges win first game of Wisbech Table Tennis League Premier Division season
Nets & Edges moved off the bottom of the Wisbech Table Tennis Premier League with their first win of the season.
And what a win it was, with two victories each from Freddie Reed, Steve Goodale and Adrian Alvarez-Domingo – plus a Steve and Adrian doubles win – seeing them through for a 7-3 win against Inbetweeners.
For their opponents, man-of-the-match Clive Welsman scored all his sides’ points with a fine maximum.
Meanwhile, Exiles welcomed back the fit again Don Dixon – who wasted no time in showing he was back.
Only man-of-the-match Brett Heppenstall with a maximum could stop him. Unfortunately, Don was Exiles’ only success story as Wizards went on to win 8-2.
Two each from Alan Ashberry and Grant Brightey, plus a Brett and Grant doubles win, confirmed the victory.
With Wayne Mason playing for Trojans, it was always going to be a tough night for Eagles.
The man-of-the-match scored a fine maximum and was matched by David Lemmon, who by all accounts was in scintillating form.
Steve Mason beat Keith Phillips, and Wayne and David took the doubles for an 8-2 win.
For Eagles, Paul Rich and Owen Turner won one each with wins over Steve.
In the First Division, Stingers narrowly held on to their table-topping position with an 8-2 win over Wanderers.
Man-of-the-match Igors Scekalevs scored a good maximum, whilst Chris Gay and David Patrick scored two each.
For Wanderers, Steve Kent beat Chris and David Nicholas, with probably his best win of the season, beat David P.
Batmen put junior side 5 Stars B ruthlessly to the sword with a 10-0 win.
Man-of-the-match Vaughan Parker, Mark Littlechild and new signing Jeff Chung all took maximums, before Mark and Jeff the won the doubles.
Warlords closed the gap to one point in the race for the title with a magnificent 10-0 win over 5 Stars A.
Man-of-the-match Kevin Buck, Richard Gayle and Guntars Briedis all took maximums, plus a Kevin and Guntars win in the doubles.
Unfortunately for the 5 Stars A side of Alfie Yarrow, Tony Trayford and Kerry Smith, they were simply caught in the slipstream of Wanderers’ title push.
Ramblers found Spartans in untouchable form as man-of-the-match Andy Bayes, David Hughes and Graham Sheppard all scored maximums.
An Andy and David doubles win completed the rout for a 10-0 win.
The Ramblers trio of Carol Parker, Judy Hodgson and Mark Spinks tried hard and did manage to take ends, but Spartans were just too strong.
