The inaugural March Parkrun was held in West End Park on Saturday and was extremely well supported.

It was fantastic to see 242 runners from as far afield as Newcastle (Staffs), Basingstoke, Croydon and Ilford. There was also a large number of runners from local running clubs BRJ, Eye, Thorney, Ramsey, Fenland, Ely, Yaxley, Nene Valley, Huntingdon, Werrington, Team Bex from Huntingdon, Bodymode from Chatteris and, of course, March AC who provided all bar one of the volunteers.

Event director Simon Render welcomed the runners to March. A core team (Amy Ellis, Billy Bremner, Stephen Cowell, Gaelle Bryant, Dawn Veal and Katie Hunt) worked tirelessly. Parkrun ambassador David Irwin came in a respectable 21st.

After a hard-fought battle at the front, Malcolm Muir from Ilford AC came home 10 seconds in front of local runner Jevan Robertson (NVH). Jackie Wren (DSRA) was the first lady runner home (20th) in 22.26 with the highest age grading on the day, too, at 77.64%.

Melanie Murdoch from Fenland RC was second lady home in 23.38 and a mention too to Fletcher Collins-Shirley (JM11-14) from Ely Runners who was sixth in 20.24 and Sophie Fenner (JF15-17) of March AC who was fourth lady home in 26.17.

Parkrun was supported by pacers from March AC (Lee Carey, Justin Elvidge, Gaelle Bryant and Teilo Pearce) – all of whom came within 20 seconds of their target pace.

With around 100 runners new to Parkrun on the day, the organisers look forward to seeing them all back again.
