New Wisbech Town boss Allan Ross enjoys first week ahead of Daventry Town clash

New Wisbech Town manager Allan Ross has enjoyed his first week in charge - despite his opening game being postponed last weekend.

Ross took over at the Fenmen helm last week after the departures of Arran Duke and Mark Warren, and he immediately made clear his ambitions for the season.

The new era was set to begin on Saturday against Loughborough Dynamo, but weather curtailed those plans - with the Pitching In Northern Premier League Midlands Division fixture rescheduled for March 5.

"It was a huge disappointment. I was halfway to the stadium when we got the call," Ross told the Citizen.

"It could be a blessing in disguise because we had five players unavailable, so in one aspect I was quite pleased.

"At the same time, I just wanted to get the first game out of the way and be able to see what standard the current available players are at."

With the Fenmen unable to play or train after the game because of the conditions, they instead took part in a group gym session.

Ross met the players at training last Thursday night, and spent the majority of it meeting and greeting with his new squad while having a look around the club's facilities.

"I've been very busy with sorting out the squad," he added.

"We have quite a few players on loan, so there's a lot of discussions going on about which ones will be available until the end of the season.

"Even though I got to meet the players on Thursday and see a little bit of training, I didn't learn too much."

The Fenmen were planning to train last night depending on the weather, and will do so again tomorrow.

Ross says he wants to get down to work quickly ahead of their home clash against Daventry Town this Saturday.

"It's probably better that we get to play at home, have a good attendance, play in front of our own fans," he said.

"They haven't had much to cheer about recently, so hopefully they'll be refreshed and re-energised.

"We think Daventry is a game we can pick up all three points from."

The former Bourne, Sleaford and Pinchbeck boss said he has enjoyed his first week in charge despite its hectic and unpredictable nature.

"To be honest, I couldn't wait until three o'clock on Saturday," he said.

"It was a whirlwind of the week, and I was looking forward to the game where it was pressure off and down to the players to perform and show me what they've got.

"Now, we move forwards this week. I've tried to implement ideas and with technology being so good, I've been able to send the players certain things.

"We start with training this week and do our best with what we've got."

  • Wisbech Town have announced the reforming of their under-18s team. This follows a successful application to the Thurlow Nunn Youth League, and coaching applications are open.
