March host first Buddy Relay

A sunny morning greeted March Athletic Club runners for their inaugural Buddy Relay on Sunday.

The relay took place at their Elm Road clubhouse and saw 10 teams of three runners take on the challenge, with one of the teams being from friendly rivals the Three Counties Running Club.

The relay was to raise money for the mental health charity MIND, in memory of Dan Chester. The charity Do it for Dan aims to raise awareness of mental health issues through sport.

March AC raised £237 for MIND on the day through donations to enter the relay and for post-run refreshments.

The relay was safely socially distanced and involved the runners taking on a course from the clubhouse, through the nature reserve at Whitemoor and back to the clubhouse.

The first runner in each team runs 5k solo, then runs 5k with runner two. Runner two then drops off runner one and picks up runner three and they run a further 5k together.

The relay was started by Peter Jackman, on his 90th birthday. Peter was a founding member of March AC 44 years ago.

Octogenarian March AC runner Pat Brown took part on the day, which marked the 43rd anniversary of the club’s first ever race. Pat took part in that first ever race and is still out and enjoying his running.

Some of the teams were a family affair, with the Watts family second overall and the Brown family fourth.

The overall winners were the rival team from Three Counties, the Drop Outs, who completed the 15k course in 63:15. In second place, The Killawatts recorded 69:06 and third place went to Fenland Rascals in 70:54.
