1st XI squeeze eighth Whitings Cambs League victory of season
March Town 1st XI squeezed out their eighth Whitings Cambs League Division 1 victory of the season when they narrowly beat Histon by seven runs in a tense finish at The Avenue on Saturday.
It was perhaps fitting that Saranga Rajaguru should snaffle up a running catch in the covers to bag the vital 30 points as the Sri Lankan produced another good all-round performance.
His 53 runs stabilised the innings when wickets began to tumble and, on a softer than normal deck because of Thursday’s rain, March did well to finish on 151.
Rajaguru also passed the 1,000 run milestone for the season, with 674 runs coming on Saturdays, including three half-centuries and a ton in his last four knocks!
Under-19s skipper Sam Clarke made a rare appearance as an opening batsman, scoring a useful 19, with the March tail also wagging.
Skipper Tyler Phillips picked up the wickets of both openers, but after a spell of rain the Histon target was revised to 136 off 45 overs.
Rajaguru managed to grip the slippery ball to wheedle three more batters out before slow left-armers James Harradine and Spencer Saberton again bowled well to each return figures of 2-11. Saberton bagged the last wicket with three balls to spare.
March 1st XI 151 all out 49.4 overs (Saranga Rajaguru 53, Sam Clarke 19), Histon 128 all out, 44.3 overs (Saranga Rajaguru 3-35, James Harradine 2-11, Spencer Saberton 2-11, Tyler Phillips 2-15).
