Second for March Marlin Ross at Nationals

Last weekend six March Marlins swimmers competed in the East Region Open Water championships at Whitlingham Lake near Norwich.

Molly McGowen came third in the county 3000m, while Jessica Shaw in the 800m at her first open water finished fifth in the county. In the 1500m Tilly Carter-Kitchingman was sixth, Gemma McGowen fifth and Nat Cook fifth. Ross Wisby came first in the county and region at 5000m.

On Saturday Wisby travelled down to Rother Valley to compete in the ASA National Masters Open Water Championships. He swam the 3000m event and came second overall in his age group. Last year Ross became a world record holder by swimming 45 miles around the island of Jersey in an unbelievable time of 9 hours 26 minutes.

Masters swimmers competed at the European Masters Open Meet at the London Olympic pool. Martyn Fresher, Richard O’Leary, Garry Mavin, Wisby and Sonia Ledger broke two regional records in the relays they entered.

At the Fenland Open Meet at Whittlesey, Charlotte Shaw, Graham Shaw (not related), Danielle and Jessica Rayner all won their age groups.

At the East Regionals in Norwich Jessica Shaw qualified for the 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly and came third in her age group in the 100m. Elliotte Ledger competed in the 100m breaststroke and 100m backstroke.

At the Cambs Development Champs 15 Marlins swimmers between them won 42 top three placing medals.

Marlins swam to second place in the Senior Fenland League against strong opposition to be rewarded a place in the A final in September.
