Wisbech would have taken a point against second-placed Norwich, however having created numerous chances and only converting one of 15 short corners, they will be bitterly disappointed to not have taken all three.

Man of the match went to Ben Tarratt, with goals from Will Denny and Tom Jupp.

Keen to make their game in hand count and keep their promotion hopes alive, Wisbech opened the scoring through Lisa Williamson.

Georgie Dunn created some space and slotted the ball in the far corner. Williamson grabbed her second with a well-worked goal around the Royston keeper; then after half-time scorers were Claire Apted’s third in as many games, Joanne Gomm and Williamson completed her hat-trick.

This bumps Wisbech up to second in 1N, with only four points separating the top six.

Wisbech host Royston at 4pm and play Bishops Stortford in the quarter-finals of the trophy away at 1pm on Sunday.

Wisbech knew they needed to put in an outstanding performance get anything from the tough game.

Tom Culshaw and Will Denny stood strong and controlled the middle of the pitch with ease.

On 15 minutes, Wisbech, dangerous on the counter-attack, saw Joey Gomm distribute the ball to Sam Blunt, who squared to Lisa Williamson, who netted.

With 12 minutes to go, St Albans scored within open play but Wisbech found another gear; Williamson and Charlie Paine set up Sam Blunt, who fired into the roof of the net on his reverse.
