Six-try Ollie from Wimblington is Mann of the match for Eastern Counties

In poor conditions, with driving rain and strong winds, Wisbech Grammar School’s 1st XV rolled up their sleeves on Saturday putting in a team performance that delivered a 16-5 win against Wymondham College.

Against the elements in the first half, fly-half Henry Thornton, from Wisbech St Mary, kicked two penalties to put the side 6-0 up.

Thornton continued to control the territory in the second half, with the back line nullifying Wymondham’s running threat with some outstanding defence. When WGS had the ball the forwards made serious yards with the ball in hand allowing for second half tries from Henry Oldershaw-Ellis (Spalding) and Matt Holden (Wisbech).

On Sunday 1st XV player Ollie Mann, from Wimblington, represented Eastern Counties U16s at full back as they faced Notts, Lincs & Derbys. Eastern Counties won 48-17, with Mann running in 30 points with six tries.

Head of rugby Alex Laybourne said: “It has been a superb weekend for Wisbech Grammar School rugby. I was delighted with the performance and work ethic of the 1st XV on Saturday, who thoroughly deserved their win.

“I am also very pleased for Ollie and his achievements with Eastern Counties, I know with the continued all round rugby support he is receiving that he has the potential to do very well.”
