Harborough 1

Wisbech Town 5

It’s good to talk – just ask Wisbech Town FC boss Brett Whaley.

Whaley’s terrific start to his Wisbech Town reign continued as they extended the only remaining 100 per cent record in the top-flight of the UCL on Saturday.

But it came after the Fenmen boss sat down for a heart-to-heart with his players following the stuttering home display against Diss in the FA Cup.

Whaley said: “We had a couple of training sessions last week and we also had a couple of long chats.

“I thought we looked very tense against Diss in the FA Cup.

“We had a talk before Saturday’s game and I told the players to try to relax a little bit more.”

Whaley’s approach seemed to have had the desired effect at Harborough.

Matt Sparrow marked his first start for the club with an explosive 12-minute hat-trick and Declan Rogers struck twice in a 5-1 rout.

A delighted Whaley said: “It was by far our best performance of the season so far.

“For 45 minutes on Saturday we were excellent. We scored four but it could have easily been six or seven.

“In the second half we really wanted to go and send out a message to the rest of the league but it was really hot and we didn’t quite match what we produced in the first half.

“Everything we talked about in the week and before the game worked on Saturday.

“It was good for me and good for the players to play like that.

“If we can go from a 45-minute performance and do that for 70 or 80 minutes we won’t be losing too many games this season.”

The impressive Sparrow could have easily returned home with five goals to his name after missing two one-on-ones with the home goalkeeper.

“In the league we are now averaging four goals a game,” said Whaley.

“It was all too tight against Diss.

“Against Harborough we tried to get lots of pace in the wide areas and it worked.”
