Pinnacle House key to Wisbech & District Table Tennis League success

In 2014 Snowmountain Enterprises offered the Pinnacle House premises to the local community for a period of 10 years, writes Peter Munch.

In the same year the Wisbech & District Table Tennis League utilised half the ground floor.

In the league’s 66th year it finally had a base available, seven days a week, to promote the sport in the area, something they had always hoped for but never had the permanent place to do so.

In the past, expansion was limited with teams playing from other club premises and church halls, etc. We started with eight teams playing from Pinnacle House on three tables. We then started a “Knock Night” every week throughout the year to attract new players of all abilities.

Over the last five years we have laid a new floor upgraded the lighting and now have five brand new top of the range Stiga tables and new surrounds.

Three tables are in regular use for match play from 7pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and is now enjoyed by teams from the Wisbech, March and King's Lynn Leagues. Outside of the regular Winter season we run a Summer league over 13 weeks which has also grown in popularity.

Apart from the 60 regular registered league players of Wisbech we have had a total of 159 players interested in playing table tennis joining as associate members over the last five years.

Some of these are accommodated on our Monday morning sessions 11am to 1pm and Friday afternoons for those 50yrs-plus from 1 to 3pm.

These are both supported by Fenland D.C. We also run Monday afternoon sessions, 2-5pm and is open to anyone. There are also Saturday sessions 1pm to 3pm, again open to all abilities. Equipment is also available.

We have at last been able to aid the further development of our rising stars along with Tydd Topspin Club by agreeing to help host their Junior league on Saturday mornings from 10am to 12 noon starting this month.

Interest has certainly grown over the last six years and this is due to the support of the local council, local donations and help from a dedicated group of players.

We now have 12 teams playing out of Pinnacle House. This clearly shows that if you have the dedicated premises then you can grow the sport, indeed any sport.
