Wisbech sides struggle during a tough weekend of action
Wisbech Town Hockey Club teams endured a difficult return to league action following a one-week break in the calendar.
The Ladies 1sts travelled to Ipswich 2nds hoping to build on their Cup win the previous week.
Despite creating numerous chances, Wisbech found themselves 2-0 down after 26 minutes.
Jane Proctor pulled a goal back for Wisbech five minutes before the break to give the Fenland side a foothold, but Ipswich eventually ran out 5-1 winners.
This weekend, they host Dereham 2nds at Harecroft Road.
The Men's 1sts suffered an 8-3 loss to second-placed Norwich City 2nds at home.
Wisbech scorers were: Jack Bass, Danny Haynes and Jonny Garner.
On Saturday, they travel to Division One North league leaders Cambridge University.
Two late goals saw the Men's 2nds suffer a 3-2 reverse to Cambridge Nomands, where Jonathan Shippey and Josh Porter found the back of the net.
This weekend, they host St Ives 2nds.
The Ladies 2nds lost 2-1 to Division 3 North West high-flyers Ely City at Harecroft Road.
Freya Matthews was on target for Wisbech while Sarah Labross made several fine saves in the Wisbech goal.
The ladies travel to third-placed St Neots 2nds this weekend.
Wisbech Men's 3rds, who travel to their counterparts from Spalding this weekend, let a two-goal (Sam Markillie and Dom Garfoot) lead slip at home to Cambridge University 4ths in a 6-2 loss.
There was no joy for the Ladies 3rds with a 4-0 defeat to Haverhill and next host Bourne-Deeping 2nds on Saturday.
The Ladies 4ths lost 3-0 at Ely where Player of the Game Sindija Dack performed well both in and out of possession.
They host Peterborough 5ths on Saturday.
Goalkeeper Ian Bell made a string of fine stops as the Men's 4ths lost 4-2 to Pelicans 4ths.
The goals came from Howard Atkins, and Brandon Ruff and on Saturday they entertain Newmarket 3rds.
The Men's 5ths battled to a 2-2 draw against Kettering 4ths with Ciaran Lowe and Willis Ruff scoring.
The team travel to Bourne-Deeping 5ths this weekend.
