Last weekend saw round one of the National Angling Times Super Cup taking place, writes Ken Wade.

On the local front Townsend Lakes were up against strong opposition in the form of Cromwell AC from Huntingdon and former finalists JVAC based at Decoy Lakes.

With the match held on the Cedar pool at Decoy our local side did their reputation no harm at all, even though they came third in a very close match. JVAC won it by just one point scoring 11, then came Cromwell on 12 and Townsend with 13. Top individual with 115lb 4oz was Andy Kelk, then came Ricky Ashwell on 113lb 6oz and Tony Watling with 102lb 2oz.

The Buttonhole Fishery Tuesday matches have already started to produce some big weights. In the latest match it was Andy Carter leading the way with 109lb 14oz, then came Danny Button on 105lb 7oz, with Lester Pratt third on 93lb 7oz.

Fenland Rods fished the Oak Pool at Decoy Lakes on Sunday and saw all those down at the top end of the lake find plenty of bites, while several pegged at the car park end found it tough going. Leading the way from peg 13 was Matthew Lutkin who fished sweetcorn into the corner for a winning weight of 86lb 5oz . He also won the £22 Golden Peg so a good start to the season for him. Second place went to the consistent Kevin Lee, who had a net of barbel to finish on 80lb 4oz, then came John Garner with 76lb 4oz and Dave Garner on 67lb 13oz.

This weekend the club is back at Decoy Lakes, this time on the Cedar Pool fishing for the Club Cup.

Despite the bad weather forecast for Saturday it turned out to be a pleasant day out at Pidley for the latest Rookery Waters Open match. At the start of the day the carp were cruising just under the surface so shallow fishing was the order of the day. Gavin Butler took the top spot from peg 31. He started shallow on 6mm pellet 2ft deep to catch carp and brown goldfish before switching to worms and casters down the left hand edge to finish with 96lb 2oz. Runner-up was Steve Tyler from peg 3, who started on a hybrid feeder with banded pellet tight over to the empty platform to weigh in 83lb 4oz, followed by Sean Higginbottom with 79lb 14oz.

Anglers will be pleased to note that the Thursday Qualifiers for the big £2,000 summer final starts at Rookery, the first match takes place on April 28.

The weather spoilt sport for the few brave enough to fish all day in the Over 60’s match on the Jay pool. Topping the field was in-form Tony Dawson, who fished a top kit close to his platform with soft pellet over 4mm feed pellets to catch a mixed bag of brown Goldfish, F1’S and small carp for 67lb 8oz. Runner-up was Roy Whincup on 52lb 4oz, then Dennis Jarvis 45lb 10oz.

In the Spratts AC match fished on the Six Island Pool at Decoy Lakes Mick Raby produced another consistent performance, despite a very slow start. He topped a strong field from peg 8 with 66lb 13oz taken on meat. New member Bob Barrett came second. He drew peg 14 and caught close in with pellet for 62lb 3oz, then came Trevor Cousins on peg 11. He put 55lb 13oz to the scales fishing close in on cat meat.

I haven’t got the full result in from the Ramsey AS match fished on the Beastie Pool on the Decoy Lakes complex but I do know that England Ladies International angler Abbi Kendal once again showed her class by topping a very strong field with 139lb, all taken on pellet. The March lass drew peg 9 and caught well all day, netting carp to 6lb. That was good enough to see off the challenge of partner Rob Wright, who drew peg 30 and finished second in the match on 134lb.
