Wisbech Town first team went top in both the Tucker League on Saturday and Rutland League on Sunday as their title rivals both slipped up.

Wisbech won by five wickets to go top of the Tucker before their crucial clash at second-place Ramsey next weekend.

Ramsey lost their game, so Wisbech now go 12 points clear after they disposed of Nassington by doing the hard work of dismissing them for 121 in 32.2 overs in the heatwave.

“It’s not really an issue if we lost to Ramsey,” said skipper Alan Burton. “If we beat them then it is an issue as we’ll be a decent lead of about 30 points clear and it will be like a game in hand.

“We’ve got a couple more games like that coming up with teams who are in there, like Foxton and March.

“The main thing is making sure we turn up and perform well on that day.”

He added on last weekend’s victory: “We wanted to bat first but we lost the toss. It was a good win in the end.”

Burton maintained his fine form, following the previous week’s century with an undefeated 62 to provide the backbone of the reply. He and Gary Freear (23) opened up with a rapid 60 stand off six overs and cruised to victory at 125-5 in 18.4 overs.

Earlier Kieran Haynes grabbed 2-43, Bradley Perrett 1-22, Craig Johnson 2-22, Gary Freear 1-7, James Williams 2-1 and Ivan Burgess 1-0.

The Seconds, who are third, host top placed Old Leysian.

On Sunday Eaton Socon lost and Wisbech took advantage by beating local rivals March.
