Wimblington and Wisbech Grammar School teenager Mollie wins British medals

Wimblington teenager Mollie Allen won gold and bronze medals at the 2016 British Summer Championships at the Ponds Forge Pool in Sheffield.

The Wisbech Grammar School student claimed City of Peterborough Swimming Club’s (COPs) first medal of the Championships, which sees the next generation of swimmers competing for honours against their biggest domestic rivals.

Allen qualified for a total of six events and managed to reach the finals in three: 50m Free, plus 50 and 100 Backstroke.

The 17-year-old picked up a bronze in the 100m backstroke after peaking at just the right time.

Allen, who was ranked first in the UK going into the event, qualified for the final in eighth place, but bettered her heat time by a huge 1.3 seconds in the final to finish third in a new personal best of 63.12. The swimmer started the final well and was second at the halfway point.

Allen finished eighth in the 50 Freestyle final, which she was slightly disappointed with, but didn’t let it affect her focus for the rest of the week.

On Saturday Mollie went into the 50m Backstroke ranked first with an impressive entry time of 28.93 (11th quickest of all time in the British Isles).

Allen finished second in her heat in 29.46 against an older competitor, securing her a plumb lane four draw in the final. She stepped up from her heat time in the final, winning gold in a near-PB time of 29.08 to become British champion.

She was part of the 17 years and over 4 x 200m freestyle relay team who finished the final in sixth place.

She is studying ‘A’ levels at the Grammar School, and her father Paul said: “The school are so supportive of her swimming commitments and assist her in every way possible to enable her to succeed and make training and competition commitments.”

The teenager swims under head coach Ben Negus at COPs and now takes a well earned break from swimming until September.
