Wimblington beat Bluntisham Rangers to lift William Cockell Memorial Cup

Wimblington won the William Cockell Memorial Cup on Friday night with a 2-1 victory over fellow Cambs County Senior A side Bluntisham Rangers at Newmarket Town’s ground.

All the goals were scored in the first half with Wimblington going 2-0 up before Rangers scored one of their own.

Connor Mazurek netted from inside the box to give Wimblington an 18th-minute lead after an attack down the right was not cleared, and Billy Munns added a second after 37 minutes from a rebound after the keeper had saved. Marc Puckering hit back for Rangers seven minutes later.

Manager Sean McKay told the Citizen: “I’m really pleased and proud of the lads. I feel as though we have fully deserved our cup success this season, having some difficult ties along the way.

“This competition was a priority of ours at the start of the season and thankfully we were able to make it happen.

“There wasn’t a great deal in the game on the night. We had some good moments in the first half and the second half was a bit edgy for both sides with not many clear-cut chances.

“But we managed to show some resilience and find a way to win which in cup finals is all that matters. We are now hoping to push on and climb the league table in our final ten matches.”

Wimblington had previously beaten Orwell 2-0 (Munns, Goldspink) in the First Round, Isleham United 4-3 on penalties after a 3-3 draw (Parker 2, Butt) in the Second Round and Somersham Town 4-2 in the semi-final (Munns 3, Porter).

Before the match, a minute’s silence was held for Poppy Atkinson, 10, who was killed by a car crashing onto the pitch while attending a training session at Kendal Rugby Club in Cumbria on Wednesday evening.

Wimblington: Flintoft, Cable, Liddy, Harradine, Stacey (C), Butt, Jupp, Hinton, Parker, Mazurek, Munns. Subs: Porter, Barrett, Goldspink, Wadsworth, Rout.

Attendance: 246
