Wimblington Ladies beaten by Cambridge Rangers in league opener

New name, new management, new players and the start of a new season.

Wimblington welcomed Cambridge Rangers to Parkfield for the league opener and, although they came away empty-handed, there were plenty of positives to take forward and build from.

Wimblington made the breakthrough just after 20 minutes, a good ball through from Meg Ratcliffe forced the away goalkeeper into a mistake and Erin Powell had a gift to slot home.

Rangers scored twice before the interval to lead 2-1 at the break.

At the start of the second half, a good ball forward from Molly Kirby found Fran Plitsch who netted on the rebound.

Both sides were looking to add a third goal, the game being played end-to-end at a high tempo which even the rain didn't seem to dampen.

A speculative shot from the edge of the area saw Rangers regain the lead before Erin Rimmer set up chances for both Plitsch and Georgia Stimson.

The Wimblington goalkeeper redeemed herself by tipping a shot onto the bar and some fantastic last-ditch challenges from Hana Howsam and Kirby denied Rangers from adding to their tally.

The ladies never gave up and fought until the end but were unable to find the leveller.

Wimblington travel to Leverington next week for an early season derby match.
