Wind blown out of Fenmen sails

Cogenhoe United 1,

Wisbech Town 0

Depleted Wisbech lost their penultimate game of the season in a wind-affected game at Cogenhoe.

Both sides had chances, but Cogenhoe took theirs in the second half.

Fenmen boss Dick Creasey said: “It was a poor, horrible game. The pitch is on top of a hill and it was blowing a gale. The pitch was rock-hard.

“They had one chance and took it. Sometimes it’s about the players who were not there rather than those who were there. Our play in the last third was pretty dire, if I’m honest. We went to 3-4-3 in the end to try and get something out of the game.”

They have slumped to third place in the table after looking certain to bag runners-up spot a month ago.

Wisbech are now a point behind new second place side Thurnby Nirvana, who are also two goals better-off, and the Fenmen need to win their final match next Saturday at third from bottom Sileby Rangers’ Fernie Fields Sportsground to stand any chance of stealing second.

“We’ve had chances (to seal the runners-up spot) in the last three or four games: at home to Holbeach, at home to Peterborough Northern Star, and on Saturday,” commented Creasey.

“It’s purely down to us. We’ve blown hot and cold in the last few weeks. You can make excuses about pitches being hard – but I don’t wear that. At the end of the season the table doesn’t lie.”

Wisbech: Jordan, Johnson, Fairweather, Wilson, Bishop, Smith, Reid, Millson, Cobb, Lunn, Beaumont. Subs: Alexander, Cousins.
