The 2016 Banger Racing season kicks off in style at the Adrian Flux Arena, King’s Lynn, this weekend with the 23rd running of the British Team Championship for Unlimited Bangers – better known to many as Icebreaker XXIII.

Racing begins at noon on Sunday with over 100 Unlimited Bangers expected to race, ably backed-up by a full field of Junior Bangers.

The Icebreaker attracts competitors from across the country. But a strong entry of Wisbech drivers will be aiming to lift the prestigious title.

The Gypsy Crew have entered three four-man teams, including the likes of Billy Cunningham, Kevin McClagish, Barry Overland and David Norris.

Whether they can compete for overall honours may depend on if they get drawn into a battle with their big rivals, the mainly Lynn-based Predators who also include Wisbech superstar Joe Barrett in their ranks.

However, a challenge for the day’s entertainers league title could be on the cards.

Nicky Young, the Wisbech driver famed for his impressive machinery and immaculate paintwork, will be guesting for the Essex-based Shunters. Scott Sparrow, who is one of the many Wisbech racers who focuses mainly on 1300cc Stock Cars nowadays, will lead The Firm into battle.

The Junior Banger entry includes Wisbech trio Lee Barnes, Lennie Murkin and Jay-Jay Smith.

Murkin won three races in the category last year while Barnes also made strides. Smith will be making his debut in the breeding ground for under-16 racers.
