Cambs and Hunts Premier League cricket round-up




Wisbech saw their recent winning run come to an end in the Cambs and Hunts Premier League on Saturday.

The Fenland outfit found themselves on the receiving end of a six-wicket defeat at third-placed Ramsey.

Wisbech had gone into the game on the back of two successive wins, but came unstuck after winning the toss and electing to bat on their travels.

The visitors struggled for any substantial partnerships with Gary Freaar top-scoring with 45 in a disappointing total of 145.

Opener Danny Haynes 21 and Josh Haynes both got starts, but at one stage the visitors found themselves on 84 for 5.

A sixth-wicket stand of 48 between Freaar and Sam Albutt repaired some of the damage before Wisbech collapsed to lose their last five wickets for just 13 runs.

Early wickets for Jonny Garner and overseas ace Shalin De Mel gave Wisbech a glimmer of hope in the field, but opener Ben Saunders brilliantly anchored the home innings with an unbeaten 88 as the hosts coasted to victory with six wickets in hand.

It remains tight in the table with just 28 points separating the sides in third and seventh spots.

March Town 1st lost their second game of the season in Onyx League Division Three, but still remain second in the table.

Royston batted first and scored 185 all out in 42.2 overs.

Spinner Sam Robinson was in top form, taking 5 for 17 off nine overs, receiving good support from skipper Callum Young 2 for 30 and wickets for Sam Clarke and Harry Lefevre.

In reply, March were bowled out for 171 in 38.2 overs as they fell 16 runs shy of their target.

Sam Clarke led the run chase with an excellent 51, hitting 4x6 and 4x4.

He received support from Geoff Kirby 23, Callum Young 20 and Sam Robinson 18.

Chatteris were knocked off top spot in Senior Two following a 39-run defeat at home to Cambourne.

Billy and Peter Munns both bowled tight spells with the ball, but it couldn't stop the visitors from amassing 210 for 5 from their 45 overs.

Chatteris were 15-2 in reply, before Charlie Munns 48 and Peter Munns led a fightback with a third-wicket stand of 90.

But once they were both dismissed the home charge petered out.

Wisbech 2nd prop up the rest of the table after a 10-wicket home defeat to Cambridge St Giles 2nd.

Only Matthew Gill 40 and Joe Danning 32 got to grips with the visiting attack in a total of 182 for 9 before Cambridge St Giles knocked the runs off inside 23 overs.

March Town 2nd are top of Junior League North Division Four after beating Wilburton by seven wickets.

Wilburton batted first and were bowled out for 88.

Joe Clark, in his first game of the season, took 3-12, Stuart Mills 2 for 7 and Tejas Madivada 2 for 23.

Youngster Theo Liversedge led the run chase with an unbeaten 28, hitting 5x4, Dennis Willis 18 (3x4) and Rob Moden 16 (4x4).

Wimblington also maintained their momentum with an eight-wicket success at Burwell & Exning 4th.

The wickets were shared around in the home side's total of 110 before an undefeated 37 from Mark Butler saw his side to victory in the 32nd over.

Wisbech 3rd fell 62 runs short at Chippenham 2nd despite opener C. Freaar hitting an unbeaten knock of 71 in his side's total of 171 for 6.

In Junior Five North, Oliver Tilbrook hit 49 with the bat and picked up 2-12 with the ball, but it wasn't enough to prevent them suffering a six-wicket reverse at home to Over and Willingham 2nd.

Wisbech 4th conceded their home game against Ramsey 3rd.

This weekend, sixth-place Wisbech travel to play Sawston and Babraham 2nd in Division One (11am) and second-place March entertain City of Ely in Division Three (midday).

All other games start at 1pm, with third-place Chatteris hosting leaders Cottenham in Senior Two.

In Junior Four North, second-place Wimblington welcome Sutton 2nd and seventh-place Wisbech entertain Chippenham 3rd. March 2nd are without a game.

In Junior Five North, sixth-place Chatteris 2nd travel to fifth-place Camden while Wisbech 4th are without a fixture.
